Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Calphalon Complements Stainless-Steel TongsCustomer Review: Great tongs ... I use them every day Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased these tongs because, well, I just needed tongs for the kitchen. My old tongs are the type built for the barbeque ... great on the grill, but just a little too much for the kitchen.
First off, these tongs are approximately 13 inches long. They are the perfect length for use on the stove, at the barbeque, salads, etc. The business end is large enough to grip food -- one side is semi-serrated, the other is smooth. The semi-serrated side helps grip the food, while the smooth side facilitates a scooping/spatula action (to a degree). All edges are smoothed-off, so no problems with tearing the skin off a potato or catching the edge of a pan.
These are heavy-duty tongs. They are constructed of surprisingly thick stainless steel; the hinge is top notch and the spring seems to be of the type that won't give out. The finish is very nice and even. Unlike most of my kitchen wares, these tongs do find themselves in the dishwasher from time to time with no consequences.
The action on these tongs is great -- they are easy to close, and have just enough "springy-ness" to open when you relax your grip. This was important to me, as my old barbeque tongs caused my hands to cramp up while tending to my food.
I really like the locking mechanism -- it works ... all the time ... no problems. Moreover, I found that as these tongs "aged" a bit, the lock could be engaged by pointing the tongs down (and could be disengaged by pointing the tongs upward). Again, this is nice when you're down to one hand. Once cleaned and locked, these tongs fit nicely into my spoon crock.
My only complaint with these tongs is that they don't open as far as I would have liked. The "open" dimension is approximately four inches, which makes it difficult to snatch an artichoke out of the steamer or fetch a squash out of the broiler (hence, I keep the barbeque tongs around).
If you are looking for a well-designed and well-built set of tongs that will last you a great while, I would strongly recommend these tongs.
